Wanted: Rain: Los Altos Hills farm, behind on produce, eager for storms
The much-anticipated rain that soaked the Bay Area early this week had soggy residents brandishing umbrellas and seeking dry sanctuaries. But Jason McKenney, who manages a major source of local produce at Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills, greeted the downpour with open, thirsty arms.
State's high court rejects LASD appeal: School district crafts new facilities offer

Spartans get even
The boys basketball teams from Mountain View and Los Altos highs have gone in different directions since the Eagles edged the Spartans by four points a month ago – and Friday’s rematch showed just how far.
Host Mountain View dismantled Los Altos 67-37, improving to 7-2 since losing to its district rival Dec. 21 in the Fremont Holiday Tournament final. The Eagles are 2-4 in the same span, averaging 10 fewer points per game than the surging Spartans.
Energy rebates chase away winter bills and chills
It’s no fun checking your mailbox these days, because holiday bills have taken the place of holiday cards. It’s cold outside, and you’re chilly inside, keeping the thermostat down so that your energy bill doesn’t shoot through the roof.

St. Francis student shoes the shoeless
St. Francis High School junior Shawn Esmaili discovered his compassion for those less fortunate when he visited an orphanage in Asia when he was 12 years old.
After speaking with one of the orphans, “I sensed the vision he had. I sensed he wanted to be someone really successful and he was really gifted,” Esmaili said. “I realized just how much I had and how little he had.”
Bridal buzz
This year’s blushing bride may walk down the aisle in a pink gown – one of many new color trends that join white as acceptable choices for the special day.
Event designer Sasha Souza gave a lively rundown of hot nuptial trends for an audience of event planners and brides at the Santa Clara Convention Center Wedding Faire and Symposium Jan. 7, sharing her favorite things at a luncheon filled with feather centerpieces and gold tablecloths.
Los Altos' legacy: the homey beginnings of Los Altos historic resources
Town historian Don McDonald sits in a comfortable chair in his living room, legs up on a footstool, leafing through “Images of America: Early Los Altos and Los Altos Hills,” a book he compiled in conjunction with the Los Altos History Museum.
The challenge is to identify five “historical gems” among the more than 100 Los Altos properties that appear on the Historic Resources Inventory of the Los Altos Historical Commission. No easy task, because each has something to recommend it.
Los Altos United Methodist Church has scheduled “An Evening of Respite” for families with children with special needs and their siblings 5:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Children’s Center Multipurpose Room, 655 Magdalena Ave.
The supervised program will feature dinner followed by games, crafts and music.
Boys' 1950 voyage provides backdrop for Ondaatje's latest
Author Michael Ondaatje is probably best known for his novel “The English Patient” (Vintage Books, 1993), a highly romantic and complicated tale told in flashbacks. Ondaatje’s latest novel, “The Cat’s Table” (Knopf, 2011), currently on the Bay Area best-sellers’ list, is neither particularly complicated nor very romantic, yet it is a well written coming-of-age story that proves an enjoyable read.
